If you visit Tokyo, one landmark stands above the rest—literally. Standing at nearly 20 meters tall outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba is the awe-inspiring 1:1 scale RX-0 Unicorn Gundam. This isn't just a statue; it's a masterpiece of engineering and a symbol of Japanese pop culture that draws fans from all over the world.

A Masterpiece in Scale

The Unicorn Gundam replaced the original RG1/1 RX-78-2 Gundam in 2017, bringing a more complex and modern design to the Odaiba waterfront. Every detail, from the mechanical joints to the cautionary decals, is crafted to look exactly like a "real" mobile suit has stepped out of the anime and into reality.

The Transformation: Unicorn vs. Destroy Mode

What makes this statue truly special is its ability to transform. Throughout the day, visitors can witness the statue shift between its two primary forms:

  • Unicorn Mode: Characterized by its solid white armor and single horn-like antenna.

  • Destroy Mode: The armor plates slide open, the horn splits into a V-fin, and the internal frame glows with a brilliant light.

The Night-Time Spectacle

While the statue is impressive during the day, it truly comes to life after sunset. Every evening, there are scheduled light and sound shows where the statue glows with vibrant LEDs while scenes from the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series are projected onto the walls of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza behind it. It is an immersive experience that combines music, animation, and mechanical movement.

The statue is located in the Festival Square area outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. It is completely free to view and offers some of the best photo opportunities in the city. After marvelling at the statue, you can head inside the mall to visit The Gundam Base Tokyo for exclusive kits and merchandise.
